Teams of architects, engineers, designers and contractors spend months designing and building colossal structures made entirely of canned food. High School and College students also participate, giving them an opportunity to learn more about these career fields and make important contacts in these industries.
In October these structures are built in RXR Plaza in Uniondale, and remain on display to the public for 10 days, after which all canned food is donated to Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank, for distribution to the hungry on Long Island. Since the first event in 2007, Canstruction Long Island has donated over 93 TONS of food and thousands of dollars to help feed the hungry on Long Island. Visit them at Canstruction Long Island, Inc.
Full Disclosure: I am the Executive Director of Canstruction Long Island, Inc., though I was not the member who nominated the organization for consideration.
